Water meter ground boxes have been around for a long time.
While protection of structures from lightning damage has existed for many years, there was no concept of an Electrical Earth Inspection Housing (Earth Pit) until modern electricity came into use.
As modern electrical distribution and electrical safety advanced, there became a real need for proper electrical safety equipment and the inspection of electrical distribution lines. That marked the beginning of the function of Earth Inspection Housings (Earth Pits).
In the early stages of electrical distribution, there was a need to fully embed an earth rod into the soil and, in practice, to inspect the connection points. The quickest go-to solution at that time was the water meter box.
The issue is that water meter boxes were distinctly and historically used on water lines. They had nothing to do with electrical lines, their inspection, or electrical safety.
As technology progressed and electrical inspection and safety became more demanding, Electrical Earth Inspection Housings (Earth Pits) evolved from the water meter boxes.
Electrical Earth Inspection Housings (Earth Pits) needed to provide:
Weight load strength
Ease of opening and closing
Protection of earthing assets inside, including the connections
Space to allow ground recharge liquid or compound to enter and surround the earth rod
Ease of installation
A working area to allow work or rework on the earth rods
Environmental sustainability
A product that caters to all of the above and more would qualify as an Electrical Earth Inspection Housing (Earth Pit), which is distinctly different from a water meter box.
Needless to say, this evolution of Electrical Earth Inspection Housings (Earth Pits) has clearly separated Earth Inspection Housings (Earth Pits) from water meter boxes.
